LMU SUPERINTENDENT ANTICIPATES POWER PLANT CONTRACTS

When he joined us yesterday on Talk of the Town, LMU Superintendent Paul Hartman said he’s looking forward to more information from a company called SG Preston about their plans to update LMU’s power plant.

“We hope to be hearing from them soon because our schedule to close is basically in October, so we don’t have much time in order to get two readings of city council, and enough time for the Utility Service Board to review all the materials. Time’s kind of running short so we’re hoping to see something here in the next week, week and a half. That’s what our -- we’ve been told that’s going to happen.”

“We’re pretty much aware what their plan is. We just want to see it in writing. And we want to see the contracts come back for us to get approval. We really can’t proceed any further without the USB and city council knowing what’s going on and approving it.”

Hartman said October is a “self-imposed” deadline - LMU will be done purchasing coal in September and will use the coal in October. If they have to close the plant, they’d rather do it before winter.

SG Preston is the third company that the City and LMU have negotiated with since 2012 to find a new way to provide electricity for LMU customers. Deals with Pyrolyzer LLC and Logansport Energy Group LLC did not come to fruition.
