WEST NILE INFECTION IN HUNTINGTON COUNTY

The first human case of West Nile virus infection in Indiana has been reported in Huntington County. Hoosiers are encouraged to take steps to protect themselves from West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne diseases. Mosquitoes in 27 counties have tested positive this year, including Miami and Fulton Counties.

The Indiana State Department of Health says Hoosiers should take precautions to prevent mosquito bites.

State health officials recommend that you avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are active, specifically late afternoon and dusk to dawn and early morning; apply insect repellent and install or repair screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of the home.

West Nile virus can cause West Nile fever, a mild form of the illness, which can include fever, headache, body aches, swollen lymph glands or a rash.

Some tips to reduce potential mosquito breeding grounds including discarding containers that can hold water, cleaning clogged roof gutters and frequently replacing the water in pet bowls.
