A crash yesterday between a passenger car and a semi-tractor trailer left two people injured yesterday morning. It happened at the US 35/24 exchange, just south of US 24 West yesterday morning at 6:45 a.m.
The Cass County Sheriff's Department says an SUV driven by 43 year old Santos L. Ramos-Lopez of Logansport was southbound, as was a semi-tractor trailer driven by 67 year old William Tuholski of Mill Creek. Sheriff Randy Pryor says the SUV went out of control on the ice-covered roadway as it crossed a railroad bridge. The semi attempted to move into the passing lane and struck the rear of the SUV.
The SUV came to rest in the northbound lanes of traffic. The semi overturned and came to rest partially on the roadway, with the semi-tractor itself hanging over a guard rail. The semi driver was pinned in the cab of his truck before being freed by Cass County Sheriff's Deputies.
Both drivers were transported by ambulance to Logansport Memorial Hospital. The driver of the semi suffered a broken right foot and the driver of the SUV was treated for contusions to the hand and leg. Both vehicles were a total loss.
The southbound lanes of US 35/24 were closed until about noon. Both lanes were initially closed because the soybeans the truck was carrying spilled onto the highway.
