Local employees of the North Third Street Marsh Supermarket and the soon-to-be-closed J.C. Penney store will be able to submit resumes to the Mayor’s Office.
Mayor Dave Kitchell said today that workers displaced by current economic conditions are losing jobs through no fault of their own, and many area employers can probably benefit from hiring people with experience.
“There are always going to be people caught in the revolving door of corporate America,” Kitchell said. “Many employers contact us in an attempt to find good employees. It’s my hope that in addition to the normal channels, we can provide another conduit for people facing hardships brought on my conditions that are not the fault of anyone in Logansport.”
Resumes may be e-mailed to the mayor’s office at dkitchell@cityoflogansport.org or mailed to the office at Room 200, 601 East Broadway, Logansport, IN 46947. Employers may contact the office via e-mail or by calling (574) 753-2551. Affected workers do not have to be city residents to take advantage of the free service.
Kitchell said the closure of the Marsh store was a reflection of several things, but not the Logansport economy.
“One of the concerns it presents is that it leaves much of the west and north sides of Logansport without a supermarket nearby, and in terms used nationwide, this is known as a ‘food desert’ because most of Logansport’s grocery retailers are located in the east end of the city more than six blocks from residential areas.”
The mayor said he and Cass-Logansport Economic Development Organization President Bill Cuppy had reached out to Marsh in recent weeks to find out if anything could be done to prevent the closing.
“While this particular closing means the end of one of our Marsh stores locally, we will continue to work with other grocers to fill that need in our city,” Kitchell said. “Given the competitive environment of the grocery business, it’s a void I’d expected to be filled sometime in the next year.”
