For only the second time in the award’s history, a Cass County family has two Lilly scholars. Representatives from the Cass County Community Foundation traveled to Pioneer Jr. Sr. High School yesterday to name Joseph J. Bean as Cass County’s 2015 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar. His sister, Kaley, was the recipient in 2013.
Joe Bean is the son of James and Cindy Bean and will receive a full, four-year scholarship to the Indiana college of his choice, and a $900 stipend each year for required books and equipment. He plans to attend Purdue University and major in electrical engineering.
He also intends to audition for the drumline in the Purdue All-American Marching Band. One of Bean’s accomplishments is graduating from high school in only three years.
Joe Bean is the 9th recipient from Pioneer High School and Cass County’s 34th Lilly Scholar since the program began in 1998. Several recipients since then have also had siblings named finalists, but Joe and Kaley are the first siblings to win the scholarship since Matthew Blume in 2000 and Brian Blume in 2003.
The Cass County Community Foundation received 24 applications for the 2015 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program. Applicants were required to meet minimum SAT or ACT scores and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Six finalists were selected and each will receive an award directly from the Cass County Community Foundation in recognition of their achievements.
Joe Bean and Cass County Community Foundation president Deanna Crispen are scheduled to join us Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. on Talk of the Town on 1230 WSAL.
