Indiana’s unemployment rate declined by 0.4 percent to 5.4 percent in April. The state’s unemployment rate has decreased by 2.1 percent over the past two years, while the Hoosier labor force has grown by roughly 63,000 individuals during the same period.
Indiana is now just 7,800 private sector jobs shy of the all-time peak of employment, which occurred in March of 2000.
Steven J. Braun, Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, said Indiana’s sizable gains in the Construction sector in April are definitely a positive indicator of economic growth as we move into the summer months.”
In Cass County, unemployment dropped from 5.4 percent to 4 percent. but the workforce also shrank by 262 people, with 732 reported as unemployed. White County has the area’s lowest unemployment rate, at 3.6 percent, followed by Carroll County at 3.8 percent. Pulaski County was at 4.3 percent, Fulton County at 4.4 percent, and Howard and Miami Counties were above the state rate, at 4.7 percent for Howard and 5 percent for Miami County.
