A serious accident yesterday morning on US 35 near Anoka left a Logansport man and two passengers injured. It happened around 6:45 Monday morning. Deputy Mike Shannon with the Cass County Sheriff's Department said a northbound vehicle driven by 18 year old James Champ of Walton hydroplaned on the wet roadway before crossing the centerline and striking a southbound vehicle driven by 64 year old Ubertino J. Ramirez of Logansport. Ramirez and two passengers were taken to Logansport Memorial Hospital by Prompt Ambulance. Ramirez sustained serious leg injuries and had to be extricated from his vehicle by District 1 Fire and Walton Fire. He was later transported to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne by Good Samaritan helicopter. A passenger, 61 year old Reyna Richards also sustained a leg injury; another passenger, 48 year old Roberto T Zavala, was treated for pain. Champ refused treatment at the scene, according to the Sheriff's Department.
The sheriff’s department says both vehicles were a total loss. Both lanes of US 35 were closed for a short time Monday morning and traffic was routed around the crash scene while wrecker crews cleared the debris from the road scene. The accident is being investigated by Deputy Mike Shannon.
