Later this summer, a maintenance project at the Cass County Government Building will change the facility’s appearance. Commissioner Jim Sailors talks about the project.
“We’re taking out a bond. We had a bond for the jail when we built it and that bond has expired. We just rolled it over, so we’ve got a new bond now. We have to do construction on the courthouse but not only on the courthouse, it’ll be the grounds, it’ll be High Street. There are a lot of things that need to be corrected and fixed that you don’t really know about when you’re doing a construction but the serviceability of it becomes pretty important later on. We’ve had leaks in the courthouse from the siding and from the roof, especially from the siding on the top into the courtrooms that you don’t want to be up there on a rainy day."
"We have to rebrick some of the building. We have to put some other material on the building in order to stop those leaks. We’re also going to increase the efficiency of the building because just our utilities is pretty expensive every month.”
Sailors says construction activity will begin this year.
“We’ve got a company out of Fort Wayne that’s working with us on our engineering part. Once we get that done we will go out for bids and start construction.”
The commissioners approved a bond issue not to exceed $10 million last September.
