STATE THEATRE CELEBRATES 75 YEARS

A local icon kicked off a year-long 75th anniversary celebration yesterday. Owner Kevin Burkett says the State Theatre in downtown Logansport opened June 8, 1940, and two events are scheduled this weekend.

“Friday, we have a really great show coming up. It’s a Blues and BBQ Fest. We’ve got Shively’s Bar-B-Cue that’s going to be set up. We’ve got four great bands, we’ve got Stephan Ross coming from Monticello, Steve & Jesse Michaels from here in Logansport, Kevin Bean’s 3 Ring Circus, and from Kokomo, Mike Milligan and Steam Shovel, so that’s going to be a great show. Tickets are $5 for that, $8 for table seats up front.

Sunday, kind of to get back to our roots, in celebration of the 75th anniversary, we’re showing “Gone with the Wind.” That’s going to be, I think, a really well-attended show. We’re charging 25 cents admission, so we want to go back to 1940 prices. We’re doing free popcorn samples. We’re working out a deal with Pepsi to provide some soft drinks for 5 cents as they would have been in 1940."

Sunday’s event will also include a fundraiser to restore the State sign from the front of the theatre.

Another concert is set for later this month.

We’re really excited, June 20, we’ve got Henry Lee Summer. He played up in this area quite a bit back in the late 80s. He actually played for the, I believe it was teh 1984 Iron Horse Festival, but He hasn’t been in this area for a long time.

His record label is actually reissuing his first album which is 30 years old this year. So, it’s the 30th anniversary of the “Time for Big Fun album.” That’s going to be a fantastic show. He’s a great performer, great guy and it’s going to be a lot of fun to have him here.

Tickets are going pretty quickly for that show. The tables are all sold out so our $25 tickets are gone, so all the remaining seats are $20 for that show.
