Several new laws take effect today and one of them affects teen drivers. Drivers under 21 are no longer allowed to use any sort of telecommunications device - even hands-free - for any purpose when they're behind the wheel. The law previously applied to drivers 18 and under. There is an exception for calling 911 in case of an emergency.
The law also limits the passengers a driver 21 or younger can transport for the first 6 months.
There are also restrictions on driving at night.Drivers under 18 cannot operate a vehicle between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, after 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday or before 5 a.m. Monday through Friday, unless they're traveling to or from employment, a school sanctioned activity or religious event, or are accompanied by a front seat passenger who is a licensed driver that meets specific guidelines.
