INDIANA LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OFFICIALLY RESIGNS

Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann delivered her letter of resignation to Governor Mike Pence and to the leadership of the General Assembly yesterday. Her resignation will be effective Wednesday, March 2 at 5:00 p.m. (EST). Pence outlined the Lieutenant Governor nomination and confirmation processes, as addressed in Article 5 of the Indiana Constitution

The process requires the governor to nominate a lieutenant governor to take office upon confirmation by a majority vote in each house of the General Assembly. After Ellspermann’s resignation is effective at 5 o’clock tomorrow, Pence will nominate Eric Holcomb as her successor in a message to both Senate President David Long and House Speaker Brian Bosma.

Pence announced his intention to nominate Holcomb on February 9. The Governor is expected to send a written message that will include Holcomb's affidavit affirming compliance with constitutional eligibility requirements to become Lieutenant Governor Wednesday evening. The confirmation vote is expected to occur during the morning of Thursday, March 3rd.

Upon confirmation, the swearing-in ceremony is also planned for March 3.

Under Indiana law, the lieutenant governor serves as President of the Indiana Senate and Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. The lieutenant governor also manages six state agencies including the State Department of Agriculture, Office of Community and Rural Affairs, Office of Tourism Development, Office of Defense Development, Office of Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority. Additionally, the lieutenant governor chairs the Indiana Counter Terrorism and Security Council.
