An independent review of 30,000 American cities ranks Logansport 193rd in the nation in value for first-time home buyers.
The study commissioned by LendEDU using Experian credit data determined the top 500 “ideal” cities and towns for first-time home buyers based on eight criterion. That list includes median household income, median household value, mortgage success rate, property tax rate, crime risk index, weather risk index, cost of living index and entertainment cost index.
Among the 25 Indiana communities in the top 500, Logansport is 15th. Tell City ranked eighth overall. Logansport’s ranking puts it among the top 1 percent of American communities for first-time home buyers.
“As good as this ranking is for Logansport, it may not come as a surprise to many people who have lived here for years, but it confirms what we tell people who are visiting Logansport for the first time to work or do business here,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said Monday. “While we can’t do much about Indiana weather, we’ll continue to work on reducing crime, property taxes and the cost of living and do whatever we can to make Logansport the most appealing city for any home buyer in the nation.”
Three of Logansport’s six “peer cities” identified as benchmarks by the administration based on population also are ranked. Frankfort is 154th, Huntington is 183rd and New Castle is 237th. Other Indiana cities in the rankings are Marion, 11th; Princeton, 18th; Madison, 31st; Anderson, 70th; Rochester, 72nd; Peru, 102nd; Elwood, 104th; Kokomo, 109th; Washington, 112th; Beech Grove, 161st; Bedford, 181st; Mount Vernon, 224th; Decatur, 238th; Portland, 239th; Corydon, 352nd; Greenfield, 388th; Mishawaka, 410th; Wabash, 436th; and Rushville, 443rd.
“What’s telling about these rankings is that most of Indiana’s metro area didn’t make the list,” Kitchell said. “These rankings speak to the quality of life in Logansport and three surrounding counties and the advantages of living and working here, as well as doing business here.”
