Logansport’s largest employer is expanding, and Mayor Dave Kitchell says it is a welcome sign that more progress is ahead for the city.
“Word that Tyson will invest $15 million in its Logansport plant in property and equipment improvements sends a clear message that Tyson will remain a significant player in our local economy and tax base for the foreseeable future,” Kitchell said. “The city council is considering tax abatement for the Tyson project, which is not only appropriate for our city government, but supportive of the surrounding agricultural economy in rural Cass County and northern Indiana.”
Tyson has an existing payroll of $68 million, employing more than 2,000. It also is a major contributor of revenue to the Logansport Municipal Utilities and the city tax base. Kitchell said the impact of Tyson on the economy extends to related services and pork-related after markets.
A formal vote by the full council is expected at an upcoming city council meeting.
Cass-Logansport Economic Development Foundation President Bill Cuppy is currently shepherding the proposal through the city approval process.
