Renovation and restoration of the first joint city/county veterans memorial in Indiana received a boost Tuesday.
The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority announced its award of $25,000 in tax credits to the project.
Logansport Mayor Dave Kitchell said the money is made available through the state’s Neighborhood Assistance Program.
“This program gives yet another tool in leveraging local tax money and private donations with outside resources to honor veterans, contribute to downtown revitalization and promote historic preservation,” Kitchell said. “It is yet another acknowledgment of the significance of this project by people from outside the community, and it wouldn’t be possible without city/county cooperation.”
City and county officials have already committed matching funding for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application. In addition, the Logansport Redevelopment Commission has committed funding for a Streetscape sidewalk, curb and streetlight project along the street sides of the center at Seventh and East Market streets.
The center campus is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The home at the front of the campus was built in the 1860s. The auditorium at the north edge of the campus was added following World War I as a memorial to those who served.
Kitchell said the revised long-term master plan for the center will be presented at a public meeting June 26 at McHale Performing Arts Center. Local residents also will be able to find out more information about state and federal programs to fund historic preservation for private residences and business properties. The event is free.
