GROUP VOLUNTARILY DISMISSES POWER PLANT INTERVENTION

The attorney for the Citizens Alliance for Responsible Energy (C.A.R.E.) has filed a voluntary dismissal of the group’s motion to intervene through the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Jim Brugh filed the motion after IDEM granted an extension for LMU to burn a combination of coal and pellets at the generating plant. Mayor Ted Franklin cited Brugh’s motion to intervene as one of the reasons behind terminating negotiations with SG Preston, though an ordinance passed by the Logansport City Council references the fact that Logansport did not receive a $1.75 million fee from the company.

In the motion filed yesterday, Brugh says that after the Utility Service Board determined at its Dec. 22 meeting that its business relation with SG Preston was dead and the original compliance deadline of January 31, 2016 was reinstated, the issues raised by CARE’s motion to intervene are moot.

Nancy Taylor, who commented on behalf of CARE, says that from the beginning, the group has been concerned with SG Preston’s "inability to show that it had secured funding" for the plant, and that the company "didn’t have a successful operating plant the size of the proposed Logansport facility." Taylor said too many taxpayer dollars have been wasted on the project and the group is happy that it has come to an end.

Mayor-Elect Dave Kitchell has appointed Jim Brugh to serve as the attorney for the Utility Service Board effective tomorrow.
