IMPORTANT DATES APPROACHING FOR FAMILIES OF KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS

Next month, area schools will hold Kindergarten Roundup. Bonnie Sonafrank, interim director for Cass County Reading Railroad, says it’s important for families with children who will be entering kindergarten this fall to attend.

“The roundup process is very important. Not only does it help the schools to plan, and the teachers, but it also is very beneficial to the families and to the students.”

During roundup, students at Logansport, Pioneer and Southeastern Schools will participate in a screening process and those who could benefit from some extra help will be invited to attend the Begindergarten program this summer.

"Begindergarten is a remediation-type program where the students are screened during roundup and those students who are identified as needing a little bit of an extra boost are given 90 hours during the summer where they concentrate on basic skills such as color identification, number/letter identification. The students are then screened halfway through, they're screened at the end of Begindergarten, then we track them all the way through 3rd grade to see how this has helped them.”

Bonnie Sonafrank says education is one of the topics residents who have participated in community conversations have identified as being important to the community.

“Education has been one of the areas that has been identified for Cass County as a desire to help the county get better. And, we do know that the statistics show for every one dollar invested in pre-school education, we see a return of $7 back into our community, so preschool and Reading Railroad programs are very important for Cass County.”

Southeastern Schools Kindergarten Roundup will be Wednesday, April 1.

Pioneer Elementary School will hold its 2015-16 Kindergarten Round Up on Wednesday, April 1.
