CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED

CASS COUNTY – The numbers have been totaled following the annual Earth Day Plastic Bag contest for the area elementary schools, sponsored by the Cass County Solid Waste Management District.

“I had no idea what to expect since we changed the contest a little bit this year,” Bob Ehle Jr., the Director of the CCSWMD said. “I’m simply amazed with the volume that was collected.”

Overall, 2,785 pounds of these small, plastic bags were collected for recycling. That is an increase of over 300 pounds, compared with last year, and the contest was a week shorter this year. The contest was structured so that there would be a winning grade level in each building. So, the grade in each building with the most bags, by weight, receives recognition on a plaque, provided by the Solid Waste District, and also an additional recess from the school.

So here are the winning grades from each elementary school:

All Saints - 4th

Caston - 4th

Columbia - 3rd

Fairview - 3rd

Franklin – 1st Grade

Galveston – 4th

Landis - Kindergarten

Pioneer – 2nd

Thompson - 2nd

“This helps teach the students a number of lessons,” Ehle said. “Including how by working together and doing something as simple as collecting these bags for recycling, we can help keep a significant volume of material out of the landfill.”

A big thanks to all of the schools that participated in the contest, and also to Greener Solutions in Logansport for helping to weigh and recycle the bags.

While the plans are to conduct this contest again next year, there is a possibility that the product may change from the plastic bags to something different.
