More rain this week and runoff will prompt the Army Corps of Engineers to increase water releases from the Mississinewa, Roush and Salamonie lakes and communities downstream may experience impact. Water releases are necessary to preserve the integrity of the dam.Among the communities likely to experience impacts are
Huntington, Andrews, Lagro, Wabash, and Peru, though the corps says the severity of these potential impacts cannot be determined at this time.
The National Weather Service and the Corps encourage people to stay away from floodwater, as even a shallow depth of fast-moving floodwater produces more force than most people imagine. It is dangerous to try to walk or drive in floodwater. Two feet of water will carry away most vehicles, including sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and pickup trucks.
The Department of Homeland Security is reminding Hoosiers living in close proximity to rivers, creeks, tributaries or other low-lying areas to be mindful of potential flooding risks. They say watching out for any water flow and drainage issues can help to limit future flooding.
Other steps to take include ensuring that all sump pumps are operational, and clearing any gutters or drain spouts of debris. If it can be done safely, areas near storm drains should also be cleared.
