NORTHBOUND I-65 CLOSED NEAR LAFAYETTE

A section of I-65 in Tippecanoe County remains closed as work continues to resolve structural problems with a bridge over Wildcat Creek. Geotechnical experts observed conditions at the I-65 northbound bridge over Wildcat Creek Saturday and are working to test and analyze the soils and develop a detailed plan to address and prevent further pier settlement.

Structural engineers monitoring the I-65 northbound bridge over the Wildcat Creek noticed movement in the riverbank pier and ordered the bridge closed Friday afternoon. An estimated reopening date for the bridge will not be known until soils testing and analysis is completed.

I-65 northbound merges to one lane and is diverted onto U.S. 52 at Exit 141 north of Lebanon. The detour takes US 52 north to SR 28, where it continues west to US 231 until it intersects I-65 again in White County. Temporary traffic signals are being installed at SR 28 intersections with US 52 and US 231.

INDOT has asked contractors to suspend work where the official detour rejoins I-65 in White County.

Messages alerting travelers of the closure are posted on dynamic message signs as far south as the Louisville metro area.

INDOT is working to identify and clear alternate routes other than the official detour. All lane closures have been lifted on I-74 for motorists to utilize as well. Drivers may exit I-74 and proceed north on S.R. 63, U.S. 41 and U.S. 24 as an alternate route to I-65.

Drivers can stay updated by dialing 511 from a mobile phone or 800-261-ROAD. Updates are also being posted on social media, on the traffic wise app and on mobile maps.
