SUSPECT IDENTIFIED IN RUSSIAVILLE SHOOTING

At a news conference this morning, the Howard County Sheriff identified the suspect in a weekend shooting that killed a Howard County Sheriff’s Deputy and injured another.

Indiana State Police says Deputy Carl Koontz, Sheriff Sergeant Jordan J. Buckley and officers from the Kokomo Police Department were looking for an individual with an outstanding arrest warrant around 12:30 a.m. Sunday in Russiaville. Authorities say when the officers knocked on the door of the residence and announced their presence, there was no answer. Upon entering the residence, the officers were confronted by gunfire and in turn returned gunfire. 27-year-old Koontz and 35-year-old Buckley were wounded during the exchange. A Russiaville officer and other deputies were able to extract the wounded officers from the residence and provide first aid. Both Koontz and Buckley were transported initially to Howard Regional Hospital, stabilized and then airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Howard County Sheriff Steve Rogers announced yesterday that Koontz had succumbed to his injuries.

At a news conference this morning the suspect, who swat teams determined was deceased inside the residence, was identified as 25 year old Evan Dorsey , who, according to the Indianapolis Star, was wanted for failure to appear in court on a charge of possession of a syringe. An autopsy is scheduled for later today.

The Howard County Sheriff said Buckley is doing well.

Deputy Carl Koontz’s wife asked that a moment of silence be observed at 11:10 a.m., marking 24 hours since her husband’s passing. A procession to transport his body from Indianapolis to Howard County was expected to leave Indianapolis around 2 p.m. The governor has ordered that flags remain at half staff until sunset on the day of Koontz’s funeral.
