POLICE RELEASE CAUSES OF HOWARD COUNTY DEATHS

Howard County Sheriff Sergeant Jordan Buckley was released from the hospital yesterday and participated in the procession to bring Deputy Carl Koontz, killed in the line of duty, home to Kokomo.

While serving an arrest warrant in the early morning hours of March 20th, 35-year-old Buckley, who was recently promoted to sergeant, was wounded in the upper thigh during a shootout with the wanted suspect. Buckley was first transported to Howard Community Hospital, then transferred to Methodist to treat his wounds. The same incident claimed the life of 27 year old Deputy Carl Koontz.

Shortly after the funeral procession arrived in Kokomo, the Indiana State Police released information about the cause of death for both Deputy Koontz and the 25-year-old suspect, Evan Dorsey.

According to the Marion County Coroner’s Office’s preliminary autopsy report, Deputy Carl Koontz died as the result of a single gunshot wound to the pelvis, and listed homicide as the manner of death. Homicide is the manner of death.

The Howard County Coroner’s Office preliminary autopsy report has determined the cause of death of the suspect, Evan Dorsey, was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The Indiana State Police say once the investigation is completed, it will be submitted to the local prosecuting authority for review. Part of the in-depth investigation will be the finalized autopsy reports, which typically take several weeks to complete.

On Sunday, Govenor Mike Pence ordered that flags be flown at half-staff through sunset on the day of Deputy Koontz’ funeral.
