A local retiree who recently led efforts to raise money for local Ivy Tech scholarships at the Logansport campus is this week’s Logansport Citizen of the Week.
Nancy Rhodes spearheaded the annual “For the Love of Education” fund-raiser on Valentine’s Day weekend. Nancy’s late father, Don Heckard, served on the Ivy Tech State Board. The drive to the college campus is named for him.
“Nancy is an example of someone who retires to give back, not kick back,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said today. “Her decision to become involved at Ivy Tech led to thousands of dollars from throughout the county committed to our campus so that students have affordable pathways to a college degree. It’s through the efforts of Nancy and people like her that Logansport and Cass County will be able to have a more competitive, educated and skilled workforce in the 21st century.”
Kitchell, whose wife, Julie, was the first recipient of the For the Love of Education Scholarship when she was an Ivy Tech nursing student, praised the contributors at the recent event for promoting college attainment.
“Many communities don’t have the commitment at the local level that we do to address a need for more scholarship funding not only in our community, but throughout Indiana,” he said.
Nancy will receive a certificate from the Mayor’s Office and a gift certificate to the Fireside Restaurant.
The Citizen of the Week recognizes Logansport residents, natives and former residents for their achievements and contributions.
