INDIANA WASTE INDUSTRY PIONEER INDUCTED INTO NATIONAL WASTE & RECYCLING HALL OF FAME
An Indiana waste industry pioneer was inducted into the National Waste & Recycling Hall of Fame today. The National Waste & Recycling Association honored Bill Meyer, Operations Manager for Republic Services in Wabash, Indiana, at an awards ceremony in Las Vegas as part of the 48th annual WasteExpo Conference and Exhibition. For the past 51 years, Meyer has served as a distinguished leader in the industry. In 1974, Meyer and his father purchased Able Disposal, a two-truck operation located in Chesterton. The company grew and became the largest independently operated company in northwest Indiana. It also became a catalyst for advances in waste and recycling innovations. In 1988, thanks to Meyer’s leadership, Able Disposal introduced the first curbside recycling collection program in northwest Indiana. By 1996, Able Disposal became part of Republic Services after more than 20 years of independent leadership and success. Bill Meyer stayed with Republic as area president for northern Indiana and Western Michigan, and that area quickly became among the most successful in the company. The National Waste & Recycling Association awards ceremony in Las Vegas is part of WasteExpo 2016 North America's largest solid waste and recycling tradeshow.
