Man Dies After Falling from Canoe into Big Monon Creek

A White County man is dead after falling from his canoe into the Big Monon Creek, which joins with Lake Shafer. It appears that 82-year-old Edwin Franklin of Monon was trying to retrieve a neighbor’s tent from the creek when his canoe overturned. Witnesses said Franklin went underwater and was obviously in distress. Emergency responders located Franklin in the water and brought him to shore, where he was pronounced dead. Indiana conservation officers are working with the White County Coroner’s Office to determine the definite circumstances involved and the official cause of death.
